This course explains the proper use of restraint and seclusion in inpatient psychiatric settings, outlining when these interventions may be used and the standards that guide them. You’ll learn how federal regulations and the Michigan Mental Health Code work together to protect the rights, safety, and dignity of individuals during these high-risk situations. Through clear examples and practical guidance, the course reinforces the importance of using the least restrictive measures first, documenting every step, and understanding the responsibilities of both nursing and medical staff when restraint or seclusion is necessary.

This module provides a detailed overview of standards and expectations for staff involved in restraint and seclusion, including:

  • Definitions and Distinctions between restraint, seclusion, and less restrictive interventions

  • Conditions for Use: When and how restraint or seclusion may be applied

  • Less Restrictive Alternatives: Time out and therapeutic de-escalation

  • Prohibited Uses: What restraint and seclusion are not to be used for

  • Physician Authorization and Time Limits: Required steps, orders, and renewals

  • Monitoring and Documentation: Staff responsibilities and assessment intervals

  • Patient Entitlements: Ongoing care, safety, and humane treatment requirements

  • Staff Competency: Training, assessment, and compliance expectations

This course is designed for professionals working in inpatient psychiatric hospitals or other facilities governed by both the Michigan Mental Health Code and federal regulations (42 CFR). It is also relevant for nurses, clinical staff, and administrators responsible for training and oversight of restraint and seclusion procedures.

After completing this module, learners will be able to:

  1. Define restraint and seclusion and explain how they differ.

  2. Describe when restraint and seclusion may be used in an inpatient setting.

  3. Explain staff responsibilities once restraint or seclusion are initiated.

  4. Identify required timeframes for restraint and seclusion orders and renewals.

  5. Understand the role of trained staff in ensuring safety, monitoring, and documentation.
