Workplace Essentials (WE) Workplace Violence Training

This training will educate participants about the critical nature of a workplace violence incident and the importance of appropriate preparedness. This is a comprehensive training that will take approximately 25 minutes to complete. This would be appropriate for NBCC.
Identifying Workplace Violence
This course has been designed to identify what workplace violence is, typical scenarios that may lead to workplace violence, and the warning signs to be aware of as an organization or manager. This course will also provide a definition of workplace violence.
Preventing Workplace Violence
This course provides video examples of scenarios as well as methods and strategies for preventing workplace violence. The course expert refers to the five (5) P's for preventing violence: Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance. This course also covers active listening strategies to identify workplace violence before it happens.
Who Commits Workplace Violence?
Participants of this course will learn that there is no one type, ethnicity, or employee that typically commits actions of workplace violence. The course expert does provide examples that cover all communities.
Causes of Workplace Violence
This course does provide an in-depth discussion of the potential causes of workplace violence. This section covers that stress and outside environmental changes (i.e. trouble at home) are some of the main factors that may push an employee towards violent behavior.
Warning Signs and Changes in Behavior
Participants of this course will also be provided with information regarding the warning signs that managers and organizational leaders should be aware of in regards to workplace violence. The course expert provides specific information regarding changes in behavior in employees like sudden tardiness, or poor performance, as warning signs of additional stress.
Having procedures in place to eliminate workplace violence provides employees with safe working conditions and reduces liability.
- Develop the ability to identify the potential for a violent event.
- Assess whether or not the employee meets the criteria for concern regarding a violent event.
- Develop best practices for intervening when that criterion is identified.
Joe Amico
Joe Amico is an international speaker on LGBTQ addiction issues, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor, Certified Addictions Specialist (Alcohol, other drugs and sex addiction), radio talk show host and ordained United Church of Christ clergyperson. He is past president of SASH (Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health) and NALGAP: The Association of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Addiction Professionals and Their Allies; serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Addiction Professional; Advisory Board for the New England Addiction Technology and Transfer Center and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Abuse Services LGBTQ Advisory Board. From 2009-2014 Joe served as Pastor of First Congregational Church of West Brattleboro (UCC)VT and is currently the Designated Term Minister of Tabernacle Congregational Church (UCC) in Salem, MA.
Darnell Z. Blackburn

Mr. Darnell Z. Blackburn has been actively involved in law enforcement for over 24 years. He received Bachelor of Arts Degree from Michigan State University in Psychology and worked as a police officer at Michigan State University and for the City of Auburn Hills serving on the road patrol, community policing unit, an undercover narcotics detective and an investigator.
Mr. Blackburn has received a Master's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix and is the Founder/CEO of PRAT LLC, a consulting and training company that specializes in conflict management, customer service and cultural competence. For the last 12 years he has worked for the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards setting standards for all law enforcement officers in the State of Michigan.
