These training materials were created for the Autism Center of Excellence at Western Michigan University. This course has been developed by course experts to provide insight into supporting families and pediatric clients with Autism or other behavioral health problems as their children undergo additional treatment or basic services like visiting the dentist or primary healthcare professional. This course also provides examples of behavioral approaches direct care professionals can utilize in their treatment plan.

Behavioral Approaches and Primary Care Services

This course provides behavioral health professionals with best practices and behavioral approaches for preparing pediatric clients as they undergo various health services like physicals, dental appointments, etc. This course continues to provide the strategies and tactics that can be implemented into treatment plans and shared with the families of the pediatric clients to ensure treatment stays on track and help usher positive behavioral change. 

Dr. Keith D. Allen

Dr. Keith D. Allen is a professor of psychology and pediatrics at the Munroe-Meyer Institute and the University of Nebraska Medical Center. His interests include parent training, pain and stress-related disorders in children, developmental disabilities and management of common behavioral problems. He has published more than 100 scientific articles on interventions to address behavioral health problems in children and he has published a book on the science and practice of parent training. He has received research grant support from the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services. He has been recognized at the University of Nebraska Medical Center as both a Distinguished Researcher and as an Outstanding Teacher of the Year.
