Course Overview

This course offers an introductory level to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability ACT of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy and Security Rules.  If you work at the supervisory level or higher, you may prefer to complete the HIPAA Comprehensive course instead of HIPAA Essentials. 

In The 2013 HHS HIPAA/HITECH Omnibus Final Rule, HIPAA was updated. This information is included in the two downloads below.

HIPAA is intended to help people maintain health insurance coverage and protect the privacy of personal health information (PHI). Institutions and agencies often have their own policies and procedures for HIPPA compliance. Because specific policies and procedures differ by the kind of agency and organization, these details are not included in this class; make sure that you are familiar with policies and procedures at your own organization.

Please remember, with HIPAA, the rules and laws governing confidentiality still require a mandated reporter to report abuse and neglect or demonstrations of suicidal ideation to the appropriate authorities.

It is important to note that these regulations do differ for many agencies and practices, and this course is meant to provide an introduction to the HIPAA policies and procedures.

As a newly developed course, this module is designed to support and build your understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

Describe your role in maintaining records and personal information, confidentiality, and security.

Apply HIPAA and Mental Health Code resources.

Describe your requirement to report HIPAA violations.

Describe the penalties for failure to comply with HIPAA’s provisions.
