The content in this module has been vetted and approved by the State Training Guidelines Workgroup. 

The following course is a self-paced module requiring 60 minutes to complete. LEP is approved for one social work CE and is MCBAP related. At the conclusion of the module, there is a 25 question multiple-choice test you must pass before receiving your certificate. A certificate for this module can be printed upon successful passing of 70% or higher.

Providers who work with individuals with limited English proficiency have the responsibility to recognize and assist them to obtain appropriate services.   

Limited English Proficiency (LEP) provides training for providers who may work with individuals whose primary language is not English, or who have a limited ability to read, write, speak or understand English.

Defining Limited English Proficiency

This course has been developed to provide an overview of Limited English Proficiency as it pertains to behavioral health care. Participants will develop a definition of LEP as it relates to those clients who may not have the ability to communicate effectively in English. 

Characteristics of Those Clients with LEP

This course will provide specific characteristics that a behavioral health professional should be aware of in order to determine if their client fits into this community. These characteristics have been established using evidence-based research and should be used by all professionals to determine what level of proficiency their client has. 

Laws and Regulations Associated LEP

As a practicing behavioral health professional, it is increasingly important to be aware of the laws and regulations set at the federal, state, and local levels regarding LEP This course will provide an overview of those regulations and should provide the participant with the information to clearly communicate these regulations to their clients. 

Limited English Proficiency Best Practices

Finally, this course offers multiple best practices for the assessment and implementation stages of working with clients that attribute those characteristics of Limited English Proficiency.
