This course is Part (2) of a five (5) part series whereby Dr. Clifton Mitchell delves further in a discussion about the general principles for dealing with resistance. He utilizes his professional experience; as well as varied scenarios to assist participants in identifying common mistakes of therapists that can subsequently cause and/or promote resistance. This would be appropriate for NBCC, CMHP, QMHP.

General Principles for Working with Resistant Clients

The continuation of this course builds on the basic overview of therapeutic resistance by providing additional principles regarding working with these resistant clients. 

Successful Client-Therapist Relationship Components

The course expert will discuss the aspects of behavioral health professionals' relationships that either help to exemplify the success of their efforts, or greatly hinder the therapeutic tactics being used.  

Common Mistakes and Pitfalls for Therapists

The course expert will provide examples from multiple practices that help to illustrate the common mistakes therapists make when working with resistant clients. These are meant to point out potential pitfalls for behavioral health professionals to be aware of.

Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist

Mitchell is an international clinical trainer and keynote speaker who has a love for teaching and over 23 years of training experience. He delivers practical information in a uniquely entertaining, fast-paced style that is filled with humor and examples from his experience in mental health. For over 15 years, he has studied and presented seminars on methods for dealing with resistance in therapy. In his book, Effective Techniques for Dealing with Highly Resistant Clients, he presents cutting-edge approaches for managing psychological resistance. He is a contributing author in therapy books and published in numerous professional journals including the Psychotherapy Networker, Psychotherapy in Australia, Journal of Personality Assessment, Perceptual and Motor Skills, Psychology and Education, Journal of Psychological Type, The Professional School Counselor, Vistas, and The Advocate. His ideas and writings have also been published in Men's Health Today and Barron’s Financial Weekly. Dr. Mitchell is currently a professor of counseling at East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee, where he received the Teacher of the Year award in 2002.
