The Foundations of Self-Determination examines the principles and tenets of Self-Determination. This course has been designed to help those behavioral health professionals understand the process their clients undergo when developing their personal goals how to communicate the importance of setting goals and following dreams is within the framework of behavioral health.  This course demonstrates the ability of all persons to live a life as independent as possible and to achieve their personal goals and dreams.

What is Self-Determination

This course has been developed to provide behavioral health professionals with the basics of the self-determination framework. Participants of this course will develop a working definition of self-determination and the ability to communicate this to their clients. 

Communicating the 5 Principles of Self-Determination

This course will cover the five (5) principles of self-determination including freedom, authority, and confirmation. Participants of this course will be provided information on each of the five principles and learn how these principles are effective tools for assisting with recovery and long-term treatment. 

Applying Self-Determination  Principles 

As an introductory course for Self-Determination, this course will provide the participants with examples of how the five (5) principles can be implemented into treatment plans. Participants of this course should also enroll in the two other Self-Determination courses available in this category. 

Person-Centered Planning is used for budgeting long-term care to sustain an individual's needs, preferences, and expenditures.

  • Understanding the basic building blocks of self-determination.
  • Learn and communicate the 5 principles of self-determination (everyday freedoms).
  • Listen to the examples of self-determination and apply them to your own practice.​​​​​​

Director of the Center for Self-Determination

Thomas Nerney is the Director of the Center for Self-Determination. The Center is a national effort to work in an equal partnership with individuals who have disabilities, family members and professionals to create a training and technical assistance center to implement the principles of self-determination. It is also committed to assist individuals with disabilities, family members and others to take their rightful place as leaders in their own communities. He is currently assisting states in designing new and innovative Medicaid Waivers; addressing the impoverishment of people with disabilities by promoting asset development and policy changes to Social Security.
