Definition:

Benzodiazepines are drugs that acts as a depressant on the central nervous system. This means that they slow the messages from the brain to the body, causing the sensations of relaxation and euphoria.

Some commonly abused benzodiazepines are Xanax and Valium, both available by prescription, and used in the treatment of anxiety and other panic disorders.
