Definition:
Consent to treatment is the principle that a person must give permission before they receive any type of medical treatment, test, or assessment. This must be done on the basis of an explanation by a clinician.
The main purpose of the informed consent process is to protect the patient. In general, anything other than a life-threatening emergency in which the patient is unconscious requires consent before treatment.
