Definition:

Opiates are drugs derived from the poppy plant. Opioids interact with opioid receptors in the brain and elicit a range of responses within the body; from feelings of pain relief, to relaxation, pleasure and contentment.

The most commonly abused opiates are heroin, opium, morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, hydrocodone, and codeine.

Opiates are a controlled substance and only legally available by prescription. Prescription opiates are usually prescribed to treat chronic pain conditions, under pain management care.
