Definition:

Triggers are external events or circumstances that may produce very uncomfortable emotional or psychological symptoms, such as anxiety, panic, discouragement, despair, or negative self-talk.

It is said that these are the starting stimuli or “cues to use” that can start off a particular cycle of addictive behavior. Although they may be unique to each individual, triggers are often associated with the reduction of tension, and/or the pursuit of excitement.
