The "Independent Facilitation for Person-Centered Planning Process" provides guidelines for independent facilitation and is recommended for people who have completed "Person-Centered Planning Process with Children, Adults, and Families".
Defining Independent Facilitation
This course has been designed as an accompanying course for the participants of the "Person-Centered Planning Process with Children, Adults, and Families" course. In this course, participants will be provided with the working knowledge to stand as an effective independent facilitator.
The Person-Centered Planning Process
Participants of this course will be re-introduced to Person-Centered Planning methodology as it related to independent facilitation. This includes ensuring that the participants have the knowledge to adhere to the planning and treatment processes outlined in this methodology.
Self-Determination and the Culture of Gentleness
Two major topics fall within the Person-Centered Planning methodology. This course provides additional information and discussion regarding Self-Determination and the Culture of Gentleness. These two topics are integral to the Person-Centered Planning process, and participants of this course will leave the course with an in-depth understanding of how these two topics support the methodology.
Your Role as an Independent Facilitator
In the final section of this course, course participants will gather additional knowledge about their specific role as an independent facilitator. This includes information on how independent facilitators become certified in the State of Michigan.
The Person-Centered Planning process develops individual treatment plans with clients.
Independent facilitation of the person-centered planning process is one option available to assist with planning to all clients in the public behavioral health system.

Risa Coleman
RN, MSN
Ms. Coleman currently the Director of Clinical Services at the Detroit Wayne Mental Health Authority, where she has been employed for 18 years. She is a graduate of Wayne State University, holding a Bachelors Degree, and Masters of Science in Psychiatric Nursing. Ms. Coleman has over 30 years of nursing experience working with persons with serious mental illness and developmental disabilities. She taught psychiatric nursing for several years at a local community college before working for the D-WCCMHA. Ms. Coleman continues to work closely with the Michigan Department of Community Health to ensure updated information regarding person-centered planning is integrated into Agency policies and procedures.
